Funeral Grants in Singapore: Assistance and Grants

Funeral expenses can be a significant financial expense formany in Singapore. There are some assistance programs and subsidies, provided by the government and other organisations, available to help alleviate some costs.

Funeral Grant for Government Staff (SGSCOOP)

The Singapore Government Staff Credit Co-Operative Society (SGSCOOP) is a society all current government employees (who are paid monthly, whether permanent or contracted), and “ex-employees of Government Departments, Quasi-Government bodies and private companies wholly owned by the Government”.

The society provides a Funeral Fund Grant of $300 for a death of a member and $200 for the death of a member’s spouse.

Using the deceased’s CPF Monies

If the deceased made a nomination of their CPF monies, the beneficiaries of the nomination are able to use the distributed CPF monies topay for the funeral on their own accord.

If the deceased has not made a nomination of CPF, beneficiaries are able to submit a form to claim funeral expenses, typically up to $6,000.

Documents required to made a claim:

a)    NRIC of the applicant

b)    Death Certificate of the deceased

c)     Proof of relationship to the deceased

                    i.    Spouse – Marriage Certification

                  ii.    Child – Birth Certificate of child and Marriage Certificate of parents

                 iii.    Parent – Birth Certificate of deceased and Marriage Certificate of parents

                  iv.    Sibling – Birth Certification of deceased and applicant, Marriage Certification of                            parents

d)    Funeral Reimbursement Deceleration Form

e)    Invoices from Funeral Expenses

Aid from Funeral Parlours or other Non-Profit Organisations

Other forms of aids and grants can be sought from non-profit organisations, charitable organisations, and other cultural or religious societies in Singapore. Some funeral parlours can, out of goodwill, provide some aid interms of additional items or discounted services if they are willing, or can provide such assistance if the family is in need.

Funeral Grant – Cheng Hong Welfare Services Society and Woodlands Memorial

CHWSS and Woodlands Memorial has partnered to offer pro-bono funeral services to anyone that might need aid, regardless of race, religion or background. Evaluated on a case-by-base basis, they will cover all funeral expenses if the case is approved.
