Sea Burial, Inland Scattering of Ashes (Garden of Peace): Costs, Location, Details

Scattering ashes in sea or in land are popular choices post-cremation.

Sea Burials, where ashes are scattered into the sea, can be performed off the coast of Palau Semakau. Inland ash scattering can only take place the Garden of Peace, at Chua Chu Kang Cemetery. In both cases, loved ones are placed to rest in nature, and serve as symbolic farewells.

Ashes can also be stored at home in urns.

Sea Burial

Ashes can be scattered into the sea, with no permits required. If next-of-kin prefer to conduct a ceremony, there is a dedicated site off Pulau Semakau, which is South-West of Sentosa, where ceremonies can be conducted.

 

Costs:

Sea-Burial is organised and conducted by funeral directors – contact your funeral director to enquire the price of Sea-Burials.

Depending on the type of rituals to be performed during the sea burial, if any, the price for Sea-Burials can range from $80 to $1,000.

Procedure:

Sea-Burials typically take about 1 to 2 hours, whereby next-of-kin would be brought to the site via boat. Traditionally, the ashes are contained in a cloth, and next-of-kin would open and scatter the ashes in the sea. Alternatively, ashes can be stored in a biodegradable urn and sunk into the sea.

Inland Ash Scattering – Garden of Peace

The only inland ash scattering location in Singapore is theGarden of Peace, located within Chua Chu Kang Cemetery. The Garden of Peace isopen from 9am to 5pm daily.

Note that only fine ashes are allowed to be scattered in the Garden of Peace, which requires an additional procedure after cremation. Ash Collection Centers at Chua Chu Kang and Mandai Crematoriums conduct this procedure.

Booking and Cost:

Scattering ashes at the Garden of Peace costs $320, payable by Cash Card, Credit Card or NETS.

Documents Required:

For Application:

1)     Digital Death Certificate

2)     Application of Cremation by Mandai Crematorium, or Cremation Permit by private crematorium

3)     NRIC of next-of-kin of deceased, or Letter of Authorisation if applicant is not next-of-kin

On Day of Scattering:

1)     Application of Inland Ash Scattering (link above)

2)     Identification (NRIC or Passport) of next-of-kin or authorised person.

 

Notable Conditions:

NEA will only store the remains at these public columbaria if:

1)     The deceased was Singaporean, or a Permanent Resident of Singapore (PR), or

2)     The immediate next-of-kin (parent, spouse or children) of the deceased is a Singaporean or PR.
